Cline

In VS Code, set Cline's provider to "OpenAI Compatible" and point it at Amux.
Cline is a coding agent extension for VS Code. It ships an "OpenAI Compatible" provider, so the Amux address fits directly — and it uses the standard protocol, so it has neither of Cursor's limitations.
1. Create an Amux key
Create one on the keys page in the console. The key remains viewable there after creation, so you do not need to rotate it just to retrieve it again.
2. Configure
- Open Cline from the VS Code sidebar and go to settings (the ⚙️ gear)
- Set API Provider to OpenAI Compatible
- Fill in:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Base URL | https://gateway.amux.ai/v1 |
| OpenAI Compatible API Key | Your Amux key |
| Model ID | A canonical ID, e.g. anthropic/claude-opus-5 |
- Click Done in the top right
3. Check it works
Give Cline a small task that needs a tool — "read the README and summarize it", say. It is an agent extension, so a plain text message does not tell you whether the tool path works.
Choosing models
Model ID is typed in, not picked from a list — the "OpenAI Compatible" provider does not fetch one.
Cline depends heavily on tool calls, so it is worth choosing a model that handles them well. Each model page lists its capabilities; models with weak tool support typically cannot complete agent-style tasks reliably.
To pin a provider or choose a routing strategy, enter the full suffixed form as the Model ID (anthropic/claude-opus-5:@reliability) — see the API reference. :@reliability is worth trying for long runs: failing halfway costs far more in an agent than a slightly slower first token.
Troubleshooting
Authentication failure
The key goes in OpenAI Compatible API Key, not another provider's key field — Cline keeps a separate key per provider as you switch between them. Then check the key was copied in full, is still enabled in the console, and that the workspace has balance.
"Model does not exist"
A typo in the Model ID, or a missing vendor prefix. It is anthropic/claude-opus-5, not claude-opus-5.
Tool calls keep failing
This is usually model-related. Try a model with stronger tool-calling support; each model page lists its capabilities.
Context length exceeded
Cline packs the relevant files from your workspace into the context. Switch to a model with a larger context window; each model's page states it.
